Frequently Asked Questions

Instead of offering a standard tariff, Amanda’s energy experts deep dive into an analysis of your historical consumption data to identify opportunities to reduce energy costs for your business. We like to understand your energy requirements and plans for the future to ensure we provide a reliable and sustainable solution that delivers a positive outcome.

No. Price-per-unit quotes are often limited to savings based on the volume of consumption. Amanda Energy understands there are many factors contributing to energy charges and we adopt a holistic yet detailed approach that delivers savings greater than a simple price-per-unit quote.

Electricity consumers within the South West Interconnected System (SWIS) can be divided into two general categories ‒ contestable and non-contestable ‒ based on the quantity of electricity they consume during each year.

Non-contestable customers are those that consume 50 megawatt hours of electricity or less during a year. If you consume more than 50,000 kWh/year (approximately $1,200/month) you are in the contestable customers category and can go to a provider other than Synergy. Amanda Energy has a licence to supply electricity to contestable customers. Smaller consumers must remain with Synergy and may not go to other retailers.

Yes. Western Power retains responsibility for the transmission, distribution, safety, quality and reliability of electricity in Perth and greater WA (SWIS grid). Your electricity supply will be delivered through the same network regardless of which of the electricity providers you choose. Note: Western Power does not generate electricity and is not an energy retailer.

Yes. If you want to purchase power from a retail electricity provider other than Synergy, you must have an ‘interval’ meter, commonly called a ‘smart’ meter, which gives readings every half hour. You have the right to request your old accumulation meter is changed to an interval meter for the standard fee charged by Western Power. If your power has ever been supplied by energy providers other than Synergy, or you already have a solar system, you will already have an interval meter.

If you already have a smart (interval) meter fitted there will be absolutely no interruption. To fit a smart meter, Amanda Energy will work with you and Western Power to minimise any inconvenience.

The SWIS is made up of the South West Interconnected Network (SWIN) together with all the electricity generators. Western Power is the operator of the transmission and distribution network. It is often referred to as the Western Power grid.

The Australian Energy Market Operator (AEMO) is an industry-funded semi government organisation whose role is to operate and develop the Wholesale Electricity Market (WEM) and the Gas Information Services Project (GISP) in Western Australia. The WEM operates in the SWIS. Its job is to:

  • Ensure there is sufficient capacity to meet demand from SWIS consumers via the Reserve Capacity Mechanism
  • Facilitate competition between power generators and electricity providers in Perth and greater WA,
  • Encourage private sector investment in the area of power generation and retailing,
  • Support the development of renewable energy technology,
  • System management functions.

The cost of energy supply varies between meters for a few reasons. The historical consumption for that meter affects the future cost of supply for capacity (peak demand) charges and network charges – information including the amount of power consumed and the time of day and the time of year it is consumed also affects the cost. Fixed charges such as the distance of the meter from generators and substations also vary from meter to meter.
